Design Star Season 6: So Long, Farewell…

Since my last post, 3 more Design Star contestants have been eliminated. In last week’s episode, all of the contestants were given a section of a house to make-over as part of HGTV’d. In this episode, two contestants were eliminated. Leslie was the first to go, and this decision probably made the most sense. I was slightly disappointed in Kellie’s room, not so much with the end result of the design, but in the fact that she didn’t listen to what the child said he wanted; bunk beds and lockers… and Kellie gave him neither. But second elimination came down to two designers: Kevin and Meg.

Meg’s design was a total disaster. Meg was responsible for the foyer and the upstairs den. The foyer did have some distinct design elements, but none were executed properly. But the second portion of her design, the upstairs den, had no redeeming qualities whatsoever. It was absolutely pitiful. Kevin’s room wasn’t perfect either, but it certainly went above and beyond that of Meg’s. I felt that the judges were overly harsh on their critique of Kevin’s family room space, while allowed Meg to continue to skate on thin ice. Up until this point, both Kevin and Meg had been selected as the winner of one challenge each. Meg was safe more often than Kevin, but Kevin was named as a top designer in more competitions than Meg. So the decision seemed like a toss up. In the end, the judges chose to eliminate Kevin from the competition.

This week, the remaining 4 designers were given the task of designing a designer look for less. Each was given an apartment living room to design. This week’s guest judge was Nate Berkus, and the camera challenge was a live presentation on the Nate Berkus Show. Meg’s design really stood out for the first time, and she proved that she was deserving of the previous week’s outcome. Kellie’s design didn’t get the recognition it deserved, and I felt that this week, it was Nate Berkus who took the role of the overly critical and cold judge, especially in his critique of Kellie’s design. Mark’s design was just ok, and very plain. And I absolutely loved Karl’s bookshelf idea.

Moving on to the camera challenges. The judges were way too nice to Karl regarding his presentation. He did not seem comfortable in front of the camera at all. Meg nailed the camera challenge. But Kellie and Mark were not their usual comfortable selves, sealing their fates as the bottom two designers this week. And that really upset me. I knew that Kellie’s one winning design, and two honorable mentions as a top designer couldn’t compete with Mark’s two wins and three honorable mentions. I was relying on the fact that Kellie had only been named a bottom designer once, while Mark had been on the bottom three times, to keep Kellie in the competition. But the winning designs are always worth more, and in the end, it was Kellie’s time to go. But I will continue to vote for Kellie as my Fan Favorite!
